About

Journey back in time through an ancient Scottish tradition of fish skin tanning and learn how our ancestors made use of every part of the animal by transforming fish skin into leather, using bark from trees.

You will have the chance to make your own fish leather and learn about traditional ways of tanning fish skin, and the uses thereof. We will work with completely natural and locally sourced materials such as birch or oak bark and wild caught Scottish fish skins. This method of tanning has been used for centuries throughout Scotland and makes sure that there is nothing wasted, using ancient and natural processes . You will be guided through the entire process- we will prepare and process the fish skin once it’s off the animal, learn how to make a bark tanning solution, and transform the bark soaked fish skin through softening it into a beautiful piece of leather.

You will leave with their own handcrafted fish leather and suggestions what they could craft with the leather, such as wallets, pouches, clothing or bags.

Date and Time of this workshop is yet to be determined. The whole workshop will take between 3-4 hours in total and all materials will be provided. If you would like to attend please get in touch about dates and if you are a group of at least 4 participants we can arrange a date together
